SUPPORTERS SHOCKED OVER MELBOURNE INDECRESSION

The Rugby League Supporters and Volunteer Workers’ Association has received a record number of emails after the news that the Melbourne Storm have breeched the NRL salary cap.

The pain felt by supporters of the Storm would be recognised by supporters of the Bulldogs and even supporters of clubs such as North Sydney both clubs having survived major events in their history.

However the Storm have clearly done the wrong thing and people overwelmmingly have agreed with most of the actions taken by the NRL.

Other supporters too have raised concerns about the possibility of other clubs breeching the salary cap. Certainly more news is yet to come and the fallout will continue for quite sometime.

However at the moment it is only a few people at one particular club and Rugby League has proved a highly resilient sport in its more than 100 year history.

If you want to let this Association know what you think please email our President Peter Warren at peter@rugbyleaguesupporters.com

2nd Annual General Meeting

The executive committee would like to thank all the members who attended the 2nd Annual General Meeting held tonight. It was a great turn out and it was good to see some new faces.

It was decided at the meeting that we send a couple of letters, firstly to the NRL asking what as far as the centenary year goes are they doing for the clubs in the next tier down, as there are some clubs who were foundations clubs in this tier, and as far as we are aware they haven't been mentioned. Also what is happening with junior clubs during the year. Secondly we will be asking NRL clubs what they plan on doing about player behavior as nothing seems to be done as far as discipline is concerned.

We would like to thank all members for their input throughout the year and look forward to your continued support in the year ahead.

12th July 2007

We received an answer to our letter dated 5th July 2007 from David Gallop asking about the under 20 competition and its affect on clubs.

1. It will be called the Toyota Cup and will mirror the existing Telstra Premiership.

2.The Queensland Cup, Harold Mattews, S.G. Ball and the Jim Beam cup will not be affected. There will no longer be a Jersey Flegg competition. The NSWRL will establish an open age competition to accomodate players not in the Telstra Premiership.

The NRL has forwarded a copy of the Salary Cap fact sheet to explain how it works.

A full copy of this letter will be posted shortly.

30th June 2007

Letter received from the NRL

We received a letter today from David Gallop in answer to our letter dated 14th June 2007. In regards to player movement they don't blame the salary cap or the removal of the June 30 deadline but maybe that a number of coaches have changed clubs being the reason. Our idea of concessions for long serving players to start at 5 years instead of 8 years will not be considered at this stage.

As far as the player behavior is concerned the NRL believe that it is up to the clubs and the player sto accept responsibility for their actions.

A full copy of this letter will be posted shortly.

He has given us many hours of enjoyment in his playing days whether it be for Australia, New South Wales or Newcastle but not so much enjoyment for opposition supporters.

He is a legend to the game and will be sadly missed by all.

Supporters- Your views on these issues

1. The non-competitiveness of the scrums in today's game.

2. The play the ball area. Why are players allowed to walk off the mark in the play the ball without being penalised, sometimes up to 3 metres?

Who at the top are allowing these rule changes to proceed?

Why are supporter groups never consulted on these issues? Don’t we matter to the league?

If these changes are allowed to continue unabated the game of Rugby League as you know it will be no more.

The Rugby League Supporters and Voluntary Workers Association want your views on these and any other issues, which you feel strongly about. So email, post a letter or phone your concerns to us before it’s to late.

Lets have a voice in this great game.

2. Do you agree with the stripping rule?

5. Should supporters be kept out of all decision making?

6. What is your opinion on the salary cap?

7. Is the radio commentary too limited with 2GB and MMM having radio rights?

8. Is player movement from club to club too excessive? Should there be exemptions for years of service?

To All Members

Welcome to a new year and so a new season.

It goes without saying that we highly value your membership and because of this we would like to bring you up to date with our on going dealings with the NRL, The Media and other Associations connected to our game.

We have forwarded a letter of concern to Mr Bob Millward of the ARL regarding the proposed national junior competition. A letter was also sent to Mr David Gallop of the NRL regarding your concerns as to no Sunday day finals. The NRL has now reviewed it’s decision and they will be returning to Sunday day finals in 2007. We believe our voice was heard.

Request were made asking for support to our Association to Mr Allan Jones, Mr Ray Hadley, Ms Rebecca Wilson and Mr Phil Rothfield to which we received no reply. We got a good hearing from Mr Peter Peters and Greg Hartley from 2KY and Mr Graeme Hughes and Mr Mark Geyer from 2SM. We are very grateful to 2SM for the support they have given us. We recommend to all members to support 2SM and in the event of you calling the station to voice your opinion on rugby league please mention your membership of our Association.
